Dingy Placement

Updated March 13, 2005

I have finally purchased and installed the dinghy.  The chocks where placed on the salon deck port side so that the nose of the dinghy was just aft of the port engine room Cowl Vent / dorade box.  I chose to put pad eyes for two tie-down straps on either side of the dinghy with the straps placed over the tubes.  I hope this was a good decision.  I have now found that as the tubes deflate with normal use the straps need constant adjustment.  Too late for a change now !

The West Marine (Zodiac) is a rigid fiberglass-hull. Large diameter tubes provide stability and accommodate loads to 1,145 lb. for the larger ZRIB-310. A molded, non-skid interior deck offer safe and stable platforms for passengers and gear. The tube material is Groupe Zodiac's 1100 Decitex PVC fabric with airtight, thermo-bonded seams. Standard equipment includes three strong lifting points, removable wooden seat, lifelines, towing and bow eyes, bellows pump, aluminum oars, aluminum outboard plate, and a repair kit. Backed by a 5-year fabric and no-leak fabric warranty, and a 1-year warranty on equipment. Length: 10'2"'. Beam: 4'11". Capacity (lb): 1150. Max HP: 15.

We are looking at alternatives for placement of the dingy and davit (crane) to be completed by 1st quarter of next year.  The illustration below can be printed and we can play paper dingy with it !  The upper side hull view shows a Zodiac 310R (RIB) positioned lengthwise with Tortuga's hull.  I have selected the St. Croix model 360 low profile deck crane.  The question becomes one of whether we place the dingy athwarthship (I love that word) or lengthwise (is their a nautical version of that word?).  Also, the deck crane is pole mounted with a through-deck pole extending down to the main deck.  The two possible locations are directly butted against the aft salon bulkhead on the far starboard side (as illustrated), or in the starboard walkway directly behind the wood vertical support on the bulwark.  Obviously I'm leaning toward the placement as indicated in my drawings.  But I'm open to suggestions.  Other items to keep in mind is that there will be a hard canister life raft placed on the salon deck adjacent to the dingy and a propane locker which I need to place as far forward near the centerline as possible.  Weights of all of these items are: dingy (w/motor) 350 lbs, crane 250 lbs, life raft 170 lbs.  Note weight distribution is somewhat important.
